Toasting
A practice of chanting over records begun in the 1960s during the evolution of Jamaican ska into reggae. Toasting became a mainstay of dancehall music, a full-on merger of rap and reggae that reached a high level of popularity in the Carribbean in the 1980s and early 1990s. Toasting is also a lyrical mainstay of Third Wave ska, the final leg of ska's journey from Jamaica to Great Britain to the United States. James Norton |
