Opinion Guidelines
The Opinion Section was once called Politics. But, as you
can see by some of our topics, this title
didn't really capture the full spirit of what we are trying to do.
And what are we trying to do with the Opinion Section? Essentially, we're looking for insightful,
original commentary on current issues, or even better, on
issues that should be in the news but aren't.
What We're Looking For
Short, well-researched articles (800-1200 words). Well-researched means: if you've got quotations,
tell us where we can find them. If you've got figures, give attribution. And if you make a claim
(such as, say, Bush is an alien), be sure you back it up. In fact, the more Web links you can give us,
the more we'll like you.
What We're not Looking For
Long treatises. Academic papers. Firey opinions with no basis in fact. Dry statistics with no opinion.
We love to get unsolicited manscripts, but the last thing we want to do is turn someone away for putting
a lot of work into something that doesn't conform to our form. To avoid this, consider checking out some of
our other opinions, or email
me to pitch an idea.
